Traveling with Kids

We just got back from a little road trip to San Antonio to see the great grandparents. I'm exhausted. It was a good trip, but Lane & I agreed that there will be no more traveling in our future until all of our kiddos are at least 3. I'm sure many of you have experienced this as well. They did great, but the drive was a killer (both ways). Davis was not having it. I can't say I blame him, but it was very inconvenient for me to have to jump in the tiny back seat of our car several times to try & soothe him (which did not work for the most part by the way). He probably cried 1/2 the drive. I told Lane that listening to a crying baby in the car is probably the most stressful thing ever. We were so ready to sleep that night. But of course Elliot got to sleep in between us, which ended up being not a great idea and Davis was very squirmy. The next day was a lot smoother until night time again. Elliot did great & slept in her sleeping bag giving us high hopes of a peaceful night, but Davis had other plans. He developed a runny nose that day, so although he was really tired, he kept waking up because he couldn't breathe, which left us with yet another sleepless night. When we finally reached home I just knew I would finally get a good nights sleep. But that plan was spoiled again because Davis was still dealing with the runny nose. It was at 3:30am that I told myself- I am definitely calling my parents tomorrow and begging them to come over. I had a list of errands and things to do that I did not want to even think about. Lucky for me, they obliged and the day went a lot more smoothly than it would have. And I was a lot less cranky than I could have been. So thank you mom & dad.

And just so you don't think that our trip was a total bust, here are the good times that were had...
-Any time that was not spent driving or sleeping.
-Going to the water park.
-Visiting the greats and the kids being happy the entire time.
-Going to Fiesta Texas.
-Getting a giant Marble Slab ice cream cone on the way home because I thought I totally deserved it.
The Greats

The more they travel the better they will be at it. I thought you guys were staying at a hotel. Most places will provide a ports crib if you didn't wan to bring one. Maybe next time will go better.

Oh ya. I hate traveling with little ones. Audrie travels ALL the time with her kids and her trips are always so hard because the kids don't sleep, and I swear it never gets easier! So don't listen to Jamie's comment. haha!

Driving with kids is a huge pain, but at least you had some fun highlights!

Last time we traveled to Dallas with Olivia we kept asking ourselves why it seemed so hard when she was so good the entire trip...but the logistics and stress of it is just exhausting! I read your comment to Nathan about waiting until kids were 3 to travel and he said Amen to that! :)

One day you'll have a SWEET minivan to walk around in while traveling instead of jumping the seats in a sedan. I use to let Scarlett stand and walk around to stretch her legs and that worked out well, too. Bless your heart. At least you had a chance to do some cool things!

I'm glad were not the only ones who think it is just too exhausting to travel with kids. My mom is trying to talk me into flying down to Texas for a week while Brian is deployed. I would love to see everyone but without Brian I think the trip would be too stressful.

awww, that sounds so rough. we're taking two airplane trips next month with both kids and we're dreading it with Noah. Jacob's at least old enough and can be easily entertained with videos, etc. but Noah is only 14 months and we're really not looking forward to it...haha. i feel your pain!! :)

Well, I know grandma and grandpa enjoyed your visit. I know car drives with little ones are not fun. We get to drive 8+ hours to San Diego on the 5th. Not looking forward to it.
