Playground Accident

While we were at the park yesterday, Elliot went down the slide on Lane's lap & half way down her foot got caught between the wall of the slide & Lane's leg. That resulted in her ankle twisting. She cried for about an hour & then she calmed down. There was no swelling or bruising, but she wouldn't put any weight on it & therefore wouldn't walk. We figured that it was probably just really sore and would give it some time. We wrapped it up with an Ace bandage.
This morning was no different. Still no swelling or bruising and no walking. We decided to take her into the ER to make sure there were no broken bones. I couldn't imagine there being because she would be in a lot more pain, but then again she was in a lot of pain when we tried to make her stand. So off we went. They took 2 x-rays which came up clean. The doctor was more concerned because she wouldn't walk, which made him think there was something else. He called Cook's Children's Hospital & spoke with a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. He explained how she got the injury & that doctor said it sounds like a toddler fracture, which doesn't show up on x-rays. He told our doctor to put a plaster splint on her & for us to make an appointment with him in a couple of days.
Here it is. A bit dramatic, but it doesn't allow her to move her leg. Under the bandage is a  hard cast-like splint. She doesn't look like she's in any pain, which makes us look stupid for bringing her in. But obviously something is going on that's preventing her from walking. We'll call it a fracture for now.

Something similar happened to Lexie about a year ago. She hurt her ankle/foot and wouldn't walk on it for two weeks! They took multiple x-rays but nothing was broken. They never really gave me a good explanation about what happened. Hope E gets better soon. Congrats on the boy! They are sooo fun.

Yesterday must have been the day for accidents. Check out our blog. Hope she doesn't have to keep it on long.

Yikes! That is no good at all. Sean had one of those splints when he hurt his leg. I am sure this makes things hard to get done for you because E can't move. Let us know what the specialists say.

OK do you remember when that happened to Charlotte about five months ago? EXACT same thing. Going down on my lap, caught b/w my leg and slide. She screamed and wouldn't walk for weeks. I took her in and x-rays showed nothing but she still wouldn't walk for weeks. She's totally fine now but it took a good month before she'd walk on it. Maybe she had the same thing?!

Yikes! Poor baby! That cast looks intense. It's sad about the fracture, but at least she is smiling and happy! So even though you have to carry her everywhere, she's not crying and upset. Is that a bright side?

Oh poor little Elliot, that is quite the little fracture. I hope she feels better soon, no fun to be in a cast when you are that age.

And I am loving your house, it looks so fabulous, and you decorated it so great. And congrats on the baby boy, that is so exciting, he will be such a cutie!

LOL that's hilarious how happy she looks in the hospital photo!! And hey, always better safe than sorry and if even the doctor was worried it sounds like you guys definitely did the right thing. Hope it heals quickly for her!

Poor girl! I can imagine it hurt! Wearing that cast at her age and in the heat is no fun. Hope she heals fastly. The EXACT same thing happened to Emerson at about the same age while she was in my lap, however, she was fine and put weight on it after a few hours. I felt so bad though! Her ankle was just twisted. Those slides can dangerous.

Poor baby! I think I've heard or read somewhere that slides are the #1 cause of broken bones in children, which sucks because Eli loves to slide. Hopefully she'll feel better and start walking again soon!
